Latest News on Pregnancy Diabetes

A seven-year study involving some 175,000 women in California has revealed that the rate of type 1 or type 2 diabetes among pregnant women more than doubled between 1999 and 2005.  The numbers do not show signs of slowing down either, because as experts agree, they are partially attributable to the nation’s glaring problem of obesity, especially among younger women.
The biggest spike was in teens, where rates of the disease rose five-fold.  For women between 20 and 39 years of age, rates of diabetes doubled, and in women 40 and older, diabetes cases rose 40 percent.
Gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy but usually resolves after birth, also increased among the women during the same time-frame, but not as much as pre-existing cases.
Both type 1 or type 2 diabetes pose serious health problems for both mothers and unborn children.  For the baby, there is increased risk of miscarriage, stillbirth or birth defects, not to mention setting children up for higher risk of developing diabetes and obesity later in life.  Adults with diabetes are at increased risk for cardiovascular problems, kidney failure, nerve damage and other systemic health issues. Mothers’ obesity also carries several risks for the babies.  For instance, neural tube defects in which the brain or spinal cord fail to develop normally are more common among infants born to obese moms.
Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can be managed through regular check-ups and consistent exercise, with healthy diet focusing on fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and keeping blood sugar steady at an acceptable level.  Such a lifestyle can also help keep weight level healthy.  Experts agree that diabetic women should attempt not to gain any weight beyond the standard baby weight..  If you are a pregnant woman with diabetes, be sure to keep yourself under the supervision of a health professional in following a diet.
