Oatmeal Turtle Jumbles

It is a good thing I can type with my mouth full, because I can’t stop eating these oatmeal turtle jumbles. They have a buttery, brown sugar-oatmeal-whole wheat bottom, a gooey chocolate layer mixed with pecans in the middle and then more buttery, brown sugar goodness mixed with caramels on top. Need I say more? You must try these. They are calling your name. And they’re a delicious addition to your holiday cookie tray, or an easy gift for a friend or neighbor. Plus, I’m sure Santa wouldn’t mind seeing these on the plate you leave out for him on Christmas Eve. Read More »

Chocolate Gingerbread Bars

We had company for dinner the other night and I ran out of time to fix dessert. People expect dessert when they come to my house. I take it as a compliment, but sometimes it can be a stretch to squeeze it into my meal plan with all of the things going on in my family, not to mention the hustle and bustle of the upcoming holidays. So I came up with these delicious Chocolate Gingerbread Bars that start with a box of Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Gingerbread Mix. Read More »

The Ultimate Pumpkin Pie

Several years ago, I volunteered to make the Thanksgiving pies for my husband’s large, extended-family gathering. All of the greats and grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and second cousins come from far and wide to spend Thanksgiving together. It’s a day filled with lots of laughter, good food and that ‘you’re a part of a great family’ feeling. The food is very important and hasn’t changed much since I married into the clan 16 years ago. Cherry pie has always been on the dessert table as well as pumpkin. Read More »

Apple Walnut Country Bread

Apple picking in the fall is one of our favorite family traditions. The first weekend that the apples are ripe and ready, we head out to the orchard. The fun begins with an old-fashioned, tractor-pulled wagon ride. Then it’s time to pick. The kids hunt high and low for the perfect apples. My husband takes turns hoisting the kids up on his shoulders to reach for the apples that are way up in the tree. Those are always the best. Once we have picked as many apples as we can carry, and then some, we head back home. As we’re driving, we can almost taste all of the wonderful apple recipes we’ll want to make when we get home. Read More »

White Whole Wheat Cinnamon Sugar Cookies

As the holidays get closer, it seems like my oven is on 24/7. My daughters and I spend a lot of time baking all kinds of good things for ourselves or to share with our family and friends. Walk in the front door and you’re bound to smell something amazing coming from the kitchen. One of our favorite things to make is cookies. We love them in all different shapes and sizes, soft or crispy, chewy or crunchy. Cookies are a good thing. Sometimes though, it feels like we’re on butter and sugar overload, so I like to make these cinnamon sugar cookies using Hodgson Mill White Whole Wheat flour to bring a little bit of whole grain nutrition into the mix. Good for you cookies are a great thing. Read More »

Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie

Cookies. Cookies. Cookies. We can never have enough cookies. Once the jar is empty there is more baking to be done. Chocolate chip cookies are a big favorite around my house. If I make them when the girls are home, help is never in short supply. Chairs are dragged to the counter and hands are washed before I even get things set up. Sneaking stray chips is a specialty that all three have perfected. Not sure who they learned that from. Makes baking things with chocolate chips very popular. Read More »
