Vanilla-Pear Yeast Bread with Cinnamon-Honey Butter

Begin by pulling together some bread making basics: Hodgson Mill Active Dry Yeast, Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Flour and Hodgson Mill Naturally White Flour. If you’re still trying to adjust to having whole wheat in your bread, this is a great recipe with which to begin expanding your palate. It includes a full cup of Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Flour, but also has plenty of white flour to even out the texture. If you’re accustomed to whole wheat breads, by all means, replace a cup of the white flour with more whole wheat.  Read More »

Rustic Rosemary Whole Wheat Garlic Bread

Sometimes you just need to bake. Despite the hot weather, the need to knead just won’t go away. Besides, when you have a pasta dish like Summer Harvest Pasta with Mascarpone Meatballs in the works, a great bread companion just makes sense. This is where Rustic Rosemary Whole Wheat Garlic Bread comes into the picture. It’s filled with Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Flour, Hodgson Mill Naturally White Flour, Hodgson Mill Active Dry Yeast, fresh rosemary and minced garlic – and it makes two loaves which helps justify heating up the house when it’s hot out.  Read More »

Dill Pickle Brioche Burger Buns

I got ambitious in the early-summer heat wave and made these lightly crusty, half-whole-wheat buns studded with chunks of dill pickle and onion, and covered with sesame seeds. I think you’ll find they have a knack for enveloping a burger (and all its trimmings) with tender loving care, and they’ll make you want to eat every last bite—even if there’s more bun than burger. Now THAT’S saying something. Read More »

Hot Cross Buns Cream Cheese Braid

We have a winner for the Hodgson Mill “Have A Grain Holiday” baking contest! Barbara at Barbarabakes.com wowed us with a beautiful and delicious Citrus Cranberry Cream Cheese Danish Braid that earned her first place in our food blogger contest. That’s the link to her winning entry along with detailed directions on how she made it all come together. Now that another holiday is upon us, and the seasons are a-changing, I wanted to pay homage to Barbara’s recipe, but tweak it just a little bit for springtime. I wanted to bring my favorite flavors from hot cross buns into the picture—warm spices against fresh citrus zest and golden raisins. I also toned down the sweetness just a tiny bit to reflect a hot cross bun (I left off the citrus sugar, since the finished product is sweet enough for me). I love her recipe, and I also wanted to try out a few other seasonal ideas; I think they’re both pretty terrific. Read More »

My Irish Granny’s Whole Grain Wheaten Bread

Despite being named Erin, I don’t actually have an Irish granny. But if I did, I would hope she would bake bread like this–slightly sweet and nutty with toasted Hodgson Mill Steel Cut Oats, with a crisp browned crust hiding a tender buttery biscuit crumb. (For any word nerds out there, ‘Wheaten’ is an old English word that means just what it says, and it’s the name of this type of loaf.) To me, this fun clover-shaped loaf is whole grain baking at its best—taste, texture, and looks (a triple threat!). And since it’s a soda bread, made with buttermilk and baking soda instead of yeast, it’s ready in just about an hour. It’s perfect for breakfast, toasted, with butter and jam, but it easily holds up next to a savory soup or stew. The smell of this, fresh from the oven, drew everyone in my house straight to the kitchen. . . I just love when that happens. Read More »

Tangy Sour Cream & Onion Biscuits

My favorite potato chip flavor has always been sour cream & onion. I don’t eat them very often, but if there’s an open bag, they’re hard to resist. They’re tangy, and creamy, and crunchy . . . . These biscuits, however, are as perfect a stand-in for the decadent chips as I could dream up. I like that they remind me of junk food, even though the first ingredient in the base, Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Insta-Bake, is Whole Wheat Flour. (So they’re a bit better for you than potato chips.) Read More »

Bread Making On A Schedule

My bread machine conked out a while ago. I’ll probably get another eventually, for the convenience of it, but in the meantime I’ve found I really enjoy making the time to make bread. Now don’t run away from me yet. Even extremely busy people can make bread from scratch if they think ahead.  Read More »
