Whole Grain Apple Crisp Yeast Bread

This year I decided to turn some of our apple harvest into a delicious Whole Grain Apple Crisp Yeast Bread. Everything irresistible about apple crisp can be found in this bread, from the juicy bits of cinnamon-laced apples to the sweet brown sugar and walnut crumble topping. And, not one, but three whole grains are also baked into this dessert-inspired bread, giving it a healthy twist- Hodgson Mill style.  Read More »

Mexican Grilled Pizza with Lime Sour Cream

Pizza Friday is a weekly tradition at my house, but lately the weather’s been so hot, I can’t bring myself to turn on the oven, let alone get it hot enough for pizza. So, this week I took the heat outdoors and cooked our pizza on the grill. Mexican Grilled Pizza with Lime Sour Cream is piled high with cheese, chorizo, red onion, black beans, corn, tomato, cilantro and a tangy, lime-flavored sour cream. It’s delicious, and my kitchen stayed cool. Perfect.  Read More »

Caramelized Onion and Blue Cheese Grilled Pizza

Grilled pizza is one of our favorite summer meals and this Caramelized Onion and Blue Cheese Grilled Pizza was a big hit. The sweet caramelized onions, toasted walnuts and blue cheese went perfectly together on top of a whole wheat crust that became crispy and smoky-flavored from our barbeque grill. We enjoyed this pizza as a light dinner, but it would also make a great appetizer if you have a crowd to feed. Read More »

Bow Tie Pasta with Chicken and Asparagus in Lemon-Cheese Sauce

It’s finally springtime and our faithful root vegetables have done their job and gotten us through the tough winter months. Now, bright green vegetables are popping up all over grocery store produce aisles, with fresh asparagus being one of my all-time favorites. I love to roast it, keep it raw and shave it into salads, steam it and grill it. I even grow it in my garden just to have my own supply in the early months of the season. This Bow Tie Pasta with Chicken and Asparagus in Lemon-Cheese Sauce is another way that I like to incorporate asparagus in a light, good-for-you pasta dish. Read More »

Luck ‘O The Irish Brownies

As luck would have it, I have the perfect recipe to help you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day – Luck ‘O The Irish Brownies. These brownies taste amazing and may even have you dancing a jig after one bite. They’re made with Hodgson Mill Brownie Mix with Whole Wheat Flour and Milled Flax Seed, so you know right away that they’re going be better for you than your average brownie – 100% whole grains will do that for you. Next, a tasty cream cheese batter that’s flavored with Irish liqueur is swirled into the deeply chocolate whole wheat brownie batter which creates a cheesecake-like top to the brownies. Even though these brownies have an adult spin with the liqueur, the flavor isn’t overwhelming and can be omitted and replaced with extra vanilla extract if you’d prefer. So, turn your oven on to 350˚F – we have a ‘wee’ bit of baking to do Read More »

Bow Tie Pasta with Bacon and Mushrooms

A plateful of hot pasta covered in a delicious sauce served with fresh bread and a green salad is my idea of a great dinner. People pay a lot of money at restaurants for this kind of meal when they could easily make something just as good, if not better, at home. This recipe for Bow Tie Pasta with Bacon and Mushrooms is the perfect example of this kind of meal. It begins with healthy, 100% whole grain Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Bow Ties -not something found on most menus and so much better for you than regular white flour pasta. The bow ties get tossed together with fresh mushrooms and a creamy, bacon-flavored tomato sauce that comes together in less than 30 minutes. I warmed up a nice loaf of bread, tossed together a simple salad and dinner was served. It was easy, less expensive and better for my family than eating out. It also completely satisfied my craving for a great pasta meal and made a tasty little lunch for me as leftovers the next day. Read More »

Chocolate Studded Oatmeal Bars

When it comes to home baking, quality ingredients make all the difference. Take these Chocolate Studded Oatmeal Bars, for example. They’re made with Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Flour and Scharffen Berger Semisweet Chocolate Chunks. Sure they would be good with run-of-the-mill flour and chocolate chips, but my philosophy has always been that if you’re going to take the time to make something from scratch, you want it to turn out great. Therefore, start with great ingredients. Because these bars include Hodgson Mill whole wheat flour (the entire bran and germ are stone ground, preserving all of the grain’s natural nutrients and great taste) and 62% cacao chocolate chunks; they’re immediately transformed into something so much better than your average cookie. Read More »

Smoky Mac and Cheese

This is the perfect dish to warm you up and chase away some of those winter blues. Just thinking of melted cheese makes me feel better already. The addition of smoked cheddar cheese gives this classic dish a more complex flavor and the buttery panko breadcrumb topping bumps up the appeal. To take this recipe up another notch, I’ve included Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Elbows. Like all Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat pastas, these elbows are made from 100% Durum whole wheat, the highest quality wheat available. And the hearty texture and great whole wheat taste truly compliments a rich dish like this. With Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat pasta, my family is eating healthier and getting more nutrition than they would if I’d have made this dish from regular white pasta. Read More »
