Chai Buckwheat Groats Hot Cereal

Great-tasting ancient grain buckwheat groats, flavored with warming chai spice and a pourover of creamy coconut milk.


  • 1 tsp. unsalted butter
  • 1 package Hodgson Mill Buckwheat Groats
  • 1 cup canned coconut milk
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp. ground cardamom
  • 1/8 tsp. ground ginger
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • butter, , brown sugar and additional coconut milk for topping


In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.  Add buckwheat groats and toast about 2 minutes or until lightly browned and fragrant. Add coconut milk, water, vanilla, and spices.  Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover and simmer for 18 to 20 minutes or until almost all liquid is absorbed. 

Scoop into serving bowls and top with a pat of butter, brown sugar and additional coconut milk as desired. 

Leftovers can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days and are easily reheated.
