Preheat oven to 400ºF. Grease baking sheet.
Mix yeast and water – set aside. Mix all dry ingredients together and cut in shortening until mixture is like coarse crumbs. Mix buttermilk with yeast mixture and stir into dry ingredients.
Turn out on floured board and knead a few times, just until smooth. Roll out dough to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut biscuits with 2-1/2-inch cutter or glass- press straight down and do not twist. Place on prepared baking sheet.
Bake 15-18 minutes.
