Hodgson Mill Now Has 107 Non-GMO Project Verified Items

Early adopter releasing and enrolling more new products in 2015

January 30, 2015

Hodgson Mill now has 107 products Verified by the Non-GMO Project, North America’s only third-party verification and labeling agency for non-GMO products. This is one of the largest selections available in the grocery industry, and even more remarkable considering the complex formulas of many of the verified products.

Hodgson Mill first enrolled products in 2010, with an impressive initial offering of 65 products verified in March 2011. Additional products have been enrolled and verified every year since. The number finally tipped over 100 after 11 items were verified in December 2014.

In order to achieve verification and use the trusted butterfly logo, products and ingredients are subjected to rigorous evaluation and testing to ensure they meet the Non-GMO Project Standard.  According to a recent Consumer Reports study, more than 70% of Americans say they don’t want genetically modified organisms (GMO) in their food – but over 80% of processed foods contain them.

Hodgson Mill works with their trusted suppliers to source Non-GMO ingredients. “We have to demonstrate that ingredients are traceable and file statements to prove that they meet Non-GMO standards.  Then we have to handle ingredients within our facility to maintain that traceability. It’s a big project,” explains Hope Yingst, Hodgson Mill Quality Assurance Manager.

“We hear every day from our customers, saying that they appreciate that we offer Non-GMO Verified products,” says President and Owner Bob Goldstein. “Back in 2009 we saw which way the wind was blowing, and we identified Non-GMO as a future issue. We are definitely meeting the challenge.”

The manufacturer is also actively developing innovative new products for its line, adding 18 products to its extensive line of whole grain foods in 2015. These include the following:

  • Gluten Free Starches & Flour (Quinoa Flour, Non-GMO Cornstarch, Tapioca Starch, and Potato Starch)
  • Ancient Grains (Sorghum, Buckwheat, Kamut, and Quinoa) in single-item packages
  • Sorghum, Brown Rice & Quinoa Side Dishes in 5 flavors (Southwest, Parmesan Butter, Pesto Herb, Rosemary & Garlic, and Chipotle)
  • Steel Cut Oat, Sorghum & Quinoa Hot Cereal

The new products debut publicly at Natural Foods Expo West (March 2015, Booth #2850), and are available for advance order by retailers, brokers, and distributors.  Hodgson Mill anticipates consumers will see them in stores Summer/early Fall 2015.
