Eat Slowly, Shed off Pounds

It’s like Mom always said: “Chew your food! Don’t eat too fast!” Research has shown that they are wise words, indeed. Research done at the University of Rhode Island at Kingston found that on average, people who eat slowly consumed almost 70 fewer calories per meal than people who didn’t. Multiply that by three square meals a day, and slow chewing could lead to dropping 20 pounds by this time next year.

Stomachs are lined with nerve endings called stretch receptors. When stomachs are sufficiently filled, the stretch receptors signal the brain to step away from the ‘feeding trough’, or the plate. However, there is a time lag between the signal and the translation of the message by the brain (lasting a few minutes), so in that time gap, forks usually just keep on shoveling in food. The result: overeating.

This can be prevented by eating slowly, say experts, such that the brain receptors can have sufficient time to process the sense of fullness. This strategy is especially helpful towards the end of the meal. Pause to tell a story, recommend the experts, so that fellow diners also pause. Or perhaps get up and move around. Use a smaller spoon. Anything to slow food intake, as research also underscores the finding that the more pleasure is taken in each bite, the fuller one feels. Chewing food well and taking the time to savor it makes diners tend to want less.
