Strategies Against Overeating
A study in the journal Obesity has put somewhat of a cultural spin on why overeating occurs during mealtimes. According to the article, Americans eat until external cues, such as an empty plate, tell them to stop. The French, on the other hand, use internal cues, such as no longer feeling hungry, to determine when a meal should end. Based on this, would it not benefit us to copy the French?
Other mealtime tips:
- Cut food into smaller pieces. This will actually help slow the rate at which the stomach fills.
- Set down the silverware between bites. Picking it up and using it to cut the next bite adds time to the meal.
- Chew each morsel well. Studies show that the more you savor the flavor, the more easily you reach satiety level.
- Sip water frequently. This will help fill up stomach space.
- Chat more, chow less. Connect with the people you love. Studies also indicate that emotionally satisfying times during mealtimes help individuals reach fullness even more.
- Frequently check your hunger level. As you eat, ask yourself if you’re still hungry. When the answer is no, stop eating.
