Papier-Mache Bowl
Bowl (any size or shape)
Petroleum jelly
1 cup HODGSON MILL NATURALLY WHITE ALL PURPOSE FLOUR
1 cup cold water
Newspaper, torn into 3x1 inch to 5x1 inch strips
Tempera or craft paint
Paintbrushes
Clear sealing spray for crafts (optional)
Place bowl upside down on table. Spread a thick layer of petroleum jelly over the outside and rim of the bowl.
Beat flour and water together in a large bowl, using a wire whisk, to make a smooth paste. Dip 1 strip at a time into the paste. Pull strip between 2 fingers to take off extra paste. Put wet paper strips on outside of bowl in an up-and-down pattern, covering the entire bowl.
Dip more strips into paste. Add a second layer of strips to the bowl, placing them crosswise over the first layer of strips.
Dip more layers into paste. Add four more layers of paper strips to bowl, first going up and down, and then going across. Let bowl dry for 24 hours.
Take papier-mâche bowl off the regular bowl gently, using a table knife to loosen around the edge. Paint the inside and outside of the papier-mâche bowl with tempera or craft paint. Let dry. Spray sealing spray on bowl if desired.
You may store paste in covered container in refrigerator for up to 5 days. Recipe makes 1 1/2 cups paste.
REMEMBER: DO NOT EAT PAPIER-MACHE!
