Let your children or grandchildren help shape the long rope dough and show them how easy it is to make your own homemade fresh soft pretzels. While the children are shaping the dough you can tell them this story:
The "Pretzel" or "Bretzel" was the name give to this snack food when it somehow found its way to Austria or Germany. Originally the pretzel was called a pretiola which in Latin means reward. Legend says that approximately fourteen hundred years ago there was a monk in northern Italy who didn't want to waste some left over bread dough. Therefore he rolled the dough into a strip and formed it to look like a child's arms folded in prayer. Children who learned and recited their prayers were given a pretiola (pretzel) as a reward.
