Flax Seed has been used as a food throughout history and is currently the center of many medical and nutritional studies. Rich in Omega-3 Oils and Lignans, it also offers fiber, protein, and minerals.

Our Flax Seed is grown in North America, where the cool prairie climate produces the world's finest. Then it is cold-milled, to make all the nutrients more available for absorption (whole seeds can be hard to digest), and make it more versatile for you.

Hodgson Mill's Milled Flax Seed, sometimes called (Flax Seed Meal) has a pleasant, nutty taste makes it as easy to use as it is nutritious. Sprinkle it into yogurt or mix it into smoothies; stir into hot or cold cereal, add to scrambled eggs or sauces. You can also use it in baking - replace some of the flour, or even some of the oil or egg in some baking recipes!

Certified gluten free, and produced in a dedicated gluten free environment that is also free of the top 8 most common food allergens.

Tips & FAQ's

Is Flax seed considered whole grain?

No, flax seed is a seed, so it is not eligible for whole grain certification. This product does contain the whole seed, milled to a fine texture.

Why is your flax seed different?

We have a patented selection process for our flax to ensure the best quality product. The seed is not heated during the cold milling process, keeping the product at ambient temperature and protecting the natural oils to ensure longer freshness. The quality of our product is unmatched. Fiber and oil benefits are all here.

What is the difference between brown and golden flax?

Brown and golden flax are nutritionally identical and may be interchanged in recipes. Golden flax may have a slightly lighter flavor, while brown flax seed may be deeper and nuttier. They are two different varieties of the same plant, like a red rose and a yellow rose. (Hodgson Mill Golden Milled Flax Seed is also Certified organic while our Brown Milled Flax Seed is not..)

Will this affect any medication I am taking?

We cannot offer medical advice. Please check with your health professional.

What if I am taking omega-3 oil capsules in other forms? Would I still be able to use Milled Flax seed in my diet?

Check with your health professional to see what is best for you.

How much omega-6 oil is in this product?

Approximately 780 mg per 2 Tbsp. (15g) serving.

How much omega-9 oil is in this product?

Approximately 910 mg per 2 Tbsp. (15g) serving.

How much lignan is in this product?

Approximately 40 mg per 2 Tbsp. (15g) serving.

What does flax seed taste like?

It has a slightly nutty taste.

Is it better to eat milled flax seed or whole flax seed?

With milled flaxseed, your body is able to obtain all the benefits of the oil and the fiber. Whole Flax seed has a tough seed coat layer, and it may pass through as fiber in your system, and you will not get the benefits of the omega-3 oils.

Why is my product jumping around inside the package?

This is caused by static electricity between the bag material and the product. It is harmless.

Does Flax seed lose its nutritional benefits during baking?

No, it does not.

What happens if I do not refrigerate it?

The natural oils in flax are best kept cool or cold. Rancidity is a possibility if it is not stored properly.

How much DHA does flax seed have?

Flax seed does not contain DHA.  Our flax seed is rich (contains 18-24% by weight) in the plant based omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Once ingested, the body converts a portion of ALA into DHA.  Conversion rates of ALA to DHA involve many factors including how much omega-6 fatty acids are also consumed, age, gender, ect.  There is no set way to determine how much of the ALA in flax seed will be converted to DHA and it can vary from person to person.  However, to give an average estimate, one serving (2 Tbsp or 15g) of our milled flax seed could yield around 100 mg of DHA in the body.
