Oat Bran Cereal Production Method:

We start with whole grain oat groats, and use a roller mill to crack and split the fiber-rich bran away from the starchy core, or endosperm, which generally becomes fine flour. Then we sift off some of the finer flour, leaving the larger bran flecks.


Storage recommendation:

•Dry product may be stored at room temperature, in refrigerator, or in freezer at least until the code date on the package.

•Prepared product should be consumed within 1 week of preparation.

•Let product cool completely before storing.

•Store cooked product with loose fitting lid when at room temperature.

Tips & FAQ's

Important cooking tip: When cooking as a hot cereal in the microwave, use a very large bowl and stir every 30 seconds to release the steam during the cooking process.  It will expand when cooking and will overflow in a serving size bowl.  You may want to cook at 50% power to help avoid overflow.


Can I use milk instead of water?

Yes, it will make a creamier cereal.


Can I eat oat bran cereal without cooking, add to juice, etc.

No, we do not recommend eating this cereal without cooking.

Given the finding of potentially harmful microbes in some flours, grains, and seeds in recent years, there has been growing awareness of potential food safety hazards both in the industry and among our customers. Our new statement on our packaging (Not ready to eat, must be cooked thoroughly) is to inform you, the consumer, that we recognize a risk from consuming Oat Bran with no further preparation, however slight that risk may be. Because our Oat Bran is a raw agricultural product and is not treated to kill microbes, there is a very small chance that harmful microbes may exist within. Nothing has changed about the product itself, and that includes the risk of foodborne illness. The intent of this statement is to further educate and raise awareness among our consumers that such a risk exists. We diligently evaluate our suppliers on food safety criteria, and continually test our facility in an effort to proactively detect and minimize potential hazards, including harmful microbes. We want you to safely enjoy our products, and we recognize that Hodgson Mill customers prefer to be well-informed about the products they are consuming.

What is the difference between rolled oats and Oat Bran Hot Cereal?

Rolled oats are whole oats that are first steamed, then pressed to flatten them.

We start with whole grain oat groats, and use a roller mill to crack and split the fiber-rich bran away from the starchy core, or endosperm, which generally becomes fine flour. Then we sift off some of the finer flour, leaving the larger bran flecks.

Is Oat Bran considered whole grain?

No, it is not a whole grain cereal. We sift starch off to concentrate on the fibrous bran, so it does not contain the same nutritional profile as whole grain oats.

What are steel cut oats?

Steel cut oats are made of whole oat groats, which are passed through steel blades that chop and shear the oat groat to a smaller size. Steel cut oats are whole grain.

What is the nutritional difference between oat bran and other oats?

Oat Bran has less carbohydrates per serving compared to rolled oats as the endosperm is sifted off. Oat bran has a coarser texture than oatmeal and is higher in protein. The fiber is similar to thick rolled oats. 

Can I add ingredients to my cereal?

Up to 1/2 cup of fruits, nuts, or seeds per serving may be added. Dried fruits may need to be soaked first.

Why is your serving size 1/3 cup when others are 1/2 cup?

We are required to display the serving size by weight, not volume. Grams determine the serving size. The FDA required 40 grams in a serving and the closest household measurement for 40g. Our oat bran is a denser product and will take up less space than the other products.

  How much Beta Glucan is in the Oat Bran cereal per serving?

There are (on average) 2.23 grams Beta Glucan in a serving of Oat Bran cereal.

  How do I substitute when recipe calls for rolled oats?

Use half of specified amount of oat bran as rolled oats i.e. for 1 cup rolled oats, use 1/2 cup oat bran.

 Why is my product jumping around in the package?

This is caused by static electricity between the bag material and the product. It is harmless.

  Is your oat bran heated during the milling process?

No, the oat bran cereal is not heated during the process.
